Sirocco Dance Studio is hosting the workshop, Hoop-Notiq!
Hoop-Notiq is a three hour workshop, taught by Katie Kizer of Austin, that introduces hooping, dancing with a hoop used as a prop. Hooping combines technical moves & tricks with freestyle or technical dancing.
Hooping describes the activity that unites the subculture of hoop dancers who practice this art, also known as Hoopers. In contrast to the classic toy hula hoop, modern hoopers a) use heavier and larger diameter hoops, and b) frequently rotate the hoop around parts of the body, other than the waist, including the hips, chest, neck, shoulders, thighs, knees, arms, hands, thumbs, feet and toes. Modern hooping has taken cues from diverse art forms such as rhythmic gymnastics, hip-hop, freestyle dance, fire dance, twirling, and other dance and movement forms.
Hooping is part of the greater spectrum of Flow Arts, which are playful movement arts involving skill toys that are used to evoke the exploration of dynamic, flowing, and sequential movements. This movement, and the related mind/body state, is referred to as "flow". Technically, hooping is a form of object manipulation and in as much shares some lineage with classical juggling.
First part of class will be spent cultivating hooping drills. We'll spend the second part of class easing these drills out of the technical realm and integrate dancing with hooping, and several basic off the body hoop dance moves.
A hoop is required for this class
Katie will bring several adult sized hoops to this workshop which will be available for you to take home after the class for an extra fee. This will be a beginner level workshop in which you will learn how to waist hoop, how to integrate dancing with hooping, and several basic off the body hoop dance moves.

Sirocco Studio for Middle Eastern Dance and Movement is located in San Antonio Texas. We are dedicated to both Cabaret Style and Tribal Style belly dance, and have the only active Tribal ITS group in San Antonio.
